Meet NYC CURLS' Founder, Carlos

Carlos Flores is a hair stylist by profession, with two decades' experience focused solely on curly hair care. As with many of our founders, Carlos was compelled to create his products - the well-loved NYC Curls collection- after becoming frustrated with the existing products on the market. AntidoteStreet.com chatted with Carlos to find out what sets NYC Curls apart, and what his curly hair care ethos is all about. Read on!

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR JOURNEY AS A HAIR STYLIST?

I had the privilege of being at the forefront of the curly movement. I started in the business 23 years ago and focused solely on curly hair which at that time was very unique. I worked as part of a team that came up with a vernacular and techniques that helped shape the curl. Thirteen years ago, I started traveling to London to cut curly clients and help spread the word in the UK. Six years ago, I became frustrated with the previous line I was associated with and wanted to get back to the basics so I started my NYC Curls product line.

WHY DID YOU CREATE NYC CURLS?

I saw a lot of brands keep adding new product after new product to their lines and I wanted to go back to focusing on the basics. Curly hair care doesn't have to be so complicated and you don't need a ton of different products. All you need is a sulfate free cleanser that won't strip you hair, a multi use conditioner that can be used as a daily, leave in, and deep conditioner, and a versatile gel that will lock in moisture, while providing hold and shine. So, that is what I created with NYC Curls.

HOW DOES ONE USE NYC CURLS?

The "NYC" in NYC Curls has a double meaning... It of course refers to New York City but it also refers to kNow Your Curl. There is a kNow Your Curl section I created on our NYC Curls website that shows my recommended curly hair routine, styling tips, the ins and outs of curly hair, etc. Our products were made to be used with that routine. (Check out the routine at the NYC Collections page on AntidoteStreet.com)

WHO IS NYC CURLS FOR? I.E. CAN I USE IT IF I HAVE A THICKER HAIR TEXTURE?

My line is for all curl types. It is sulfate, silicone, and paraben free. I've used NYC Curls on clients with the tightest, thickest of curls to those with the slightest of waves. It is made to be versatile and you simply have to adjust the amount of product used for your curl type.

AS A HAIR STYLIST, WHAT IS THE BIGGEST HAIR CONCERN THAT YOU SEE WITH YOUR CUSTOMERS?

The biggest concern is the breakage, dryness, and fizziness of curls. This is often caused by using products with sulfates or silicones.

CAN YOU SHARE ONE MYTH WIDELY BELIEVED BY CURLY HAIR GIRLS WHICH IS NOT TRUE?

One myth is that curly hair is a strong hair type. Curly hair is actually very fragile and should be treated as such.

WHAT'S YOUR TOP TIP FOR HEALTHY HAIR?
Deep Condition, Deep Condition, Deep Condition. Curly hair is always searching for moisture and getting in the habit of deep conditioning will do wonders for your hair. I made NYCCurls The Curl Conditioner to be a fantastic deep conditioner. Once a week, I recommend you apply it to your curls, put it up in a bun, cover with a plastic cap, and leave it in for as long a you can.

Our mission is to arm you with the best products for textured hair and to guide you in finding the best routine for YOU.
