How to prevent Single Strand Knots
If you've ever had to tackle knotted and snarled hair, we're sure you'll agree that Prevention is better than cure.
Rebecca, founder of hair care range Moisture in Abundance, shared some of her best advice for doing just that - and in particular how to avoid the tricky single strand knots that afflict curly and coily hair types.
What are Single Strand Knots?
A single strand knot is a knot that appears on a single strand of hair, seemingly out of nowhere – hence the nickname ‘fairy knots’. If you run your finger along a strand of hair, a fair knot might feel like a little bead. Single strand knots can cause larger multi-strand knots to occur and cause hair to break during styling.
What hair types are affected?
Curly/coily hair is more prone to experiencing single strand knots because the hair pattern often loops over itself. These hair types also tend to be drier and have less natural slip.
What causes them?
Although curly hair is more prone to single strand knots, other causes include lack of moisture, friction from bedding, and generally letting your hair get tangled!
4 tips for preventing them:
- Use a silk pillowcase or headscarf at night to reduce friction.

- Use a light oil to add slip to your hair throughout the day.
- Use regular moisture treatments to hydrate your hair and prevent dryness.
- If you don’t have the time for regular detangling, wear protective styles that prevent your hair from becoming tangled.
