The good folk at Black Hair Magazine recently asked us to curate the perfect winter hair care regimen especially for their readers. Check out our piece which originally appeared on their site.
Winter is COMIIING!!! Over here at Antidotestreet.com HQ, this is not just a Game of Thrones rallying call (we love Khaleesi!) but also a reminder to upgrade our winter regimen. Between the harsh temps outside and the central heating at home, black hair can get even drier than prior months leading to breakage and slow growth. Here’s our 7 essentials for your hair care stash!
1. Boucleme Intense Moisture Treatment
In winter, we don’t just Netflix & Chill. We Netflix, Deep Condition & Chill. The ingredients in Boucleme’s intensive moisturising treatment are so yummy, they seem to say, ‘in your face’ to winter dryness. The star players include Marula Oil rich in omegas 6 & 9 for protecting hair against environmental stressors; moisturising Mafura Butter to prevent breakage; softening Prickly Pear Seed Oil packed with vitamin E, minerals and fatty acids and antioxidant Sea Buckthorn Oil to stimulate growth and hair elasticity.
2. MIA’s Moisture Therapy Oil
Oil or nothing for us in the winter months. We especially like to do hot oil treatments or massaging them into our ends. This moisture therapy oil by Moisture in Abundance (MIA)contains a special blend of hydrating oils including Sweet Almond Oil, Coconut Oil, Macadamia Nut Oil and Vitamin E for moisturising and reducing hair breakage.
3. Jessicurl Hair Cleansing Cream
Every week, we cleanse. This mild shampoo alternative is ideal for regular use as it contains gentle cleansing agents which does not dry the hair out. We love that it is suitable for the thickest and driest of curls
4. Charcoal Coconut Clarifying Shampoo
Winter often has us on intense moisturising mode. This often means that our hair is more susceptible to greasy build up. Every month or so, we reach for a clarifying shampoo for removing toxins and purifying our scalp. We call it the reset button.
5. Eight Leave In Conditioner
Honestly, this one is an all year rounder. We always seal with oil though, especially in winter. It boasts of eight organic ingredients from Organic Ghanaian Shea Butter to Corsican Rosemary. Leaves hair so YUMMY… the reviews are insane.
6. Protective Silk Scarf
This beautiful protective silk scarf by Nigerian Designer, Marte Egele is our go to protecting our hair against breakage when sleeping. Sometimes we also like to use it as disguise the fact that we are deep conditioning whilst running errands
7. One Million Braid Wig
Our other protective style of choice is this wig. We call it the quickest hack ever as there is no need to sit for hours in the salon for this one. Simply cornrow your hair and slip it on.
