Sometimes we need a reminder that happiness lies in simplicity – whether it be in our daily lives or in our hair care routines! Celmira founded TSAKA Beauty with this premise firmly in mind – in fact, TSAKA means happiness (in the Ronga dialect of Mozambique), and Celmira’s approach to hair care is all about simplicity, with a few, natural products that are easy to use. We were thrilled to sit down with her to find out more about how she brought her grandmother’s traditional recipes onto the market, and how she stays true to her family's natural hair care ethos.

TELL US ABOUT YOU + TSAKA BEAUTY?

Hi, I’m Celmira. I enjoy early morning workouts, travelling and drinking coconut water. I get super excited to jump out of bed every morning to work on Tsaka and I absolutely love coaching young adults to keep their dreams alive! Tsaka Beauty is a reflection of all I’ve learned in terms of natural beauty rituals and hair care.

WHAT WAS IT LIKE GROWING UP IN MOZAMBIQUE?

I am so grateful to have grown up in Mozambique. I grew up around nature. There is no such thing as organic in Mozambique, everything just is. When I remember my childhood hair wash days, some things are just difficult to explain... I would ask my mom things like “Is the shampoo fresh or did you make it from dry stem?”. That’s how close to nature my family was (and still is). I don't think children here would question the freshness of their shampoo.

HOW DID THAT SHAPE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR HAIR, AND WHAT WAS IT LIKE WHEN YOU MOVED TO THE UK?

My hair care habits have always been inclined towards a natural routine. But I must say - immediately after I moved to the UK in 2010, I went on a hair care shopping spree to save some of my time and avoid making my own products. Shortly after I switched back to making my own hair products.

WHAT HAIR TRADITIONS DID YOUR GRANDMOTHER AND/OR MOTHER PASS ON TO YOU?

My mother and my grandmother have always encouraged me to take care of my hair from a very young age. They’ve taught me how to make my own shampoo and hair masks and what to do when my hair was a tangled mess. But I think the most important lesson was to keep my hair routine simple.

WHY DID YOU START TSAKA BEAUTY? AS FOUNDER, WHAT HAS YOUR PHILOSOPHY BEEN?

Once my friends started using my hair masks religiously, I decided to spread the love and share the best of my grandmother’s recipes with everyone. I only have 2 philosophies for Tsaka:

      1. Keep every product as authentic as possible to my grandmother’s original recipes and
      2. Make them simple to use.
WHAT MAKES TSAKA BEAUTY UNIQUE? DO YOUR PRODUCTS WORK FOR ALL HAIR TYPES?

Our hair masks include all the ingredients of my grandmother’s very own hair recipes. Our masks work best on hair types 3 and 4, be it natural, texlaxed or relaxed.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO USE THE MASKS, TO GET THE BEST RESULTS?

Try to create a monthly routine depending on the condition of your hair. People usually ask me “What’s the fastest way to grow my hair?” And my answer is always the same: focus on health first and growth will follow.

During winter, a beach holiday with salty dips, or if your hair has any damage at all, you’re better off using the SOS Hair Rescue Mask first - until the condition of your hair improves. Once you feel good about your ends and the way your hair feels overall then you can add the Black Magic Hair Mask to your routine.

i.e. If you’re focusing on damage repair:

Week 1 - SOS Hair Rescue Mask
Week 2 - SOS Hair Rescue Mask
Week 3 - SOS Hair Rescue Mask
Week 4 - SOS Hair Rescue Mask

On the other hand, If you’re focusing on length retention:

Week 1 - SOS Hair Rescue Mask
Week 2 - Black Magic Hair Mask
Week 3 - SOS Hair Rescue Mask
Week 4 - Black Magic Hair Mask

ONE OF THE THINGS WE SPOKE ABOUT WHEN WE MET WAS ABOUT SIMPLIFYING ONE'S HAIR ROUTINE. I AM AMAZED BY HOW SIMPLE YOURS IS! CAN YOU TALK US THROUGH YOUR TYPICAL HAIR CARE STEPS?

My weekly hair routine consists of:

            • Washing my hair with a DIY plant based shampoo (believe it or not, I still squeeze the stem of plants to extract sap for my shampoo).
            • After washing my hair, I deep condition with either the SOS hair mask or the Black Magic Hair Mask for 20 – 30 minutes with a self-heating cap.
            • I rinse out the deep conditioner and blow-dry my hair or air-dry my hair (if it’s not freezing cold)
            • I will use a detangler if I’ve been to the beach or the pool, otherwise I don't use any finishing products.
YOU WEAR YOUR HAIR STRAIGHT. WITH THE ADVENT OF THE NATURAL HAIR MOVEMENT, PEOPLE ARE USUALLY SCARED OF THIS. HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO DO IT WHILST MAINTAINING OPTIMAL HAIR HEALTH?

Deep condition, deep condition and more deep conditioning :) On a serious note, the only reason I’ve managed to retain my length while keeping my hair straight is because I deep condition my hair every week. Consistency makes all the difference.

WHAT'S YOUR  FAVOURITE SPOT IN MOZAMBIQUE?

The Island of Mozambique is my all-time favourite place in Mozambique. Heaven on earth I tell you - the water is so blue, the sky is so clear, the seafood is AMAZING and people are so kind there – their kindness warms my heart every time I visit.
