We met Muchaneta Kapfunde at a conference where she spoke eloquently on the impact of Wearable Technology on fashion brands today. Her platform, Fashnerd.com takes this one step further by offering impressive write ups on the fashion + tech landscape. As we launch our new blog, we are excited to share broader perspectives that go beyond hair and cut across lifestyle, art, careers and more. We are honoured to have Muchaneta kick off the 'Careers' section of our blog. Read on and be inspired by her work.
TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF AND HOW FASHNERD CAME ABOUT
I have been in the fashion industry for nearly 15 years. I cut my teeth at Tatler before going freelance and writing for various publications. A few years later, I pivoted and found myself working in fashion PR. For the next ten years, I helped brands find their voice, before quitting the day job to pursue my passion, fashion technology.
FashNerd was an idea that was born of a need to translate technology in a fashion voice. I felt that there weren’t many blogs/ news sites out there explaining all the innovative things that were taking place in the fashion tech space in a way that got people excited. This is what drove me to be that voice. The voice of fashion tech.
YOU OCCUPY A FASCINATING INTERSECTION BETWEEN FASHION & WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY. WHAT IS IT ABOUT THESE TWO AREAS THAT HOLD YOUR INTEREST?
I have always been fascinated with fashion. It holds my interest because it offers individuals the opportunity to express themselves by the clothes they wear. Fashion for me is not about what celebrity is wearing what, it is a form of self-expression that allows you to communicate with the world without saying the word.
When it comes to the role that technology plays in fashion, I find it fascinating that the merger of the two industries has become a much talked about love-affair. Technology is the alpha, dominating and leading the way, which in my book certainly keeps things interesting.
WHAT, IN YOUR OPINION IS THE MOST INTERESTING USE CASE OF WEARABLE TECH TODAY?
I can’t believe I am saying this, but it has to be the Apple Watch. It has shown great potential when it comes to things like digital health. It also has some excellent approval rating from users. That being said, the Apple Watch is not there yet. By that, I mean that there is still room for some significant improvements, like Siri for instance.
ARE YOU WORRIED ABOUT THE ADVENT OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES AND THE ADVENT OF DATA RELATED SCANDALS SUCH AS CAMBRIDGE ANALYTICA?
I am going to give a yes and no answer. Yes, I am worried mainly because security does need to be tighter when it comes to protecting data. There should be no excuse for companies to use our information without our knowledge. And no, because to take advantage of all the great things that technology can offer, we have to give up something. It is a necessary evil these days to be connected. If you are not, people usually view you as odd.
WHAT TOP 3 TIPS WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE LOOKING TO GROW THEIR CAREER IN A SIMILAR FIELD AS YOU?
My top tips on how to flourish in the fashion tech space are:
- Be passionate about what you are doing
- Do not waiver from your goal no matter how many people discourage you
- Stay ahead by continually evolving. Do not stay the same, because this is an industry that is constantly changing so it is imperative that you change with it.
WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION
My biggest inspiration is my daughter. She drives me to be the best I can be, in everything that I do. So whenever I feel too tired to do anything, she is the kick up the backside that gives me the energy to keep going.
